For those Parisians and visitors who can't head off for the beach, the beach will once again come to them as the city sets up its sandy urban beaches again along the Seine and the Bassin de la Villette under the title Paris-Plages.
This year's version of the popular program, which started in 2002, includes even more activities for the more than four million visitors it attracts each year. Originally limited to one area on the Right Bank near the city hall, it has spread further along the Seine and added the Villette basin as well.
This summer, in addition to swimming and sunbathing activities include dance classes, gymnastics, reading programs and free first-aid classes. This year, for the first time, there will also be canoeing and kayaking on the Seine. In addition, temporary outdoor pools will be set up in several other parts of the city.
