Does it enjoy an all year warm climate ? Is it a thriving city ? Is it one of those cities where retired folk go and live in peace ?

Palm Springs has lots of retired residents and especially winter residents.  it really is a thriving resort city.

It has become a year round city, but does get very hot from May through September. The rest of the year is warm. They say it gets 350 days of sun a year.

Winters are absolutely wonderful in the Palm Springs area.  Summers are unbearably hot.  Temps can exceed 40 C, Garry.  I made the mistake of stopping there in the summer some years back and when I got back to my car, the vehicle was so hot I actually burned my hand trying to get the door open.

It is thriving,  especially in the winter.  Summers tend to be relatively slower paced as is true of any place with a very hot climate.

On a cool note, if you want to escape the summer heat in the desert, the popular Palm Springs tram will wisk you up to the top of Mt. San Jacinto where you can enjoy a hike on the mountain in a pleasant temperate climate.

Mt. San Jacinto sounds more like my cup of tea ! I've tried 40c and its not pleasant.  Thanks for the well informed insight.
