Oslo, which aims to be the world's first emission-free city by 2030, took another step in that direction last week when it ordered 450 new electric buses to replace its last diesel-fueled vehicles.
The rest of Oslo's network of trams, ferries and buses is already electrified. The new buses, which cost a bit over $100,000 each are expected to add additional cost savings as well through low maintenance costs. The electric buses are actually about 5% cheaper to buy than diesels.
Other Norwegian moves to reduce carbon emissions include the recent shift of airport shuttle buses to electric models and Norway's status as the first country where over half of new car sales are electric models.
Ironically, Norway is also one of the world's largest producers of oil and natural gas through its North Sea oilfields.
