Lucy the Elephant, the most famous resident of Margate, New Jersey, is back in style and open to the public again.
Lucy, who claims to be the oldest man-made roadside attraction in America was closed for 15 month's worth of renovations inside and out, at a cost of $2.4 million from donations, the National Park Service and the New Jersey Historic Trust. Completion was delayed by discovery of water leaks.
The 6-stoy high pachyderm was one of three built in 1881, and is big enough to have served for years as a hotel, among other uses. After a close-call with demolition in the 1960s, she was saved by fans and had her future assured.
