Superman and Dr. Who could soon be homeless as payphones give way to "NYFi" terminals on the streets of New York. The city has issued a Request for Proposals to replace its current 7300 street phones with up to 10,000 terminals that would provide broadband access, free connections to 911 and 311 and touchscreen connections to services.
Mayor De Blasio believes the system could provide free WiFi at no cost to the city (perhaps through charges for other services, perhaps through continuing to have advertising on the kiosks). The city has been testing 27 kiosks, and would like a large network up by 2016. Here's more from International Business Times.
