Now, a seaplane links NYC and Boston

Tailwind Air, which operates Cessna Caravan planes fitted with pontoons, is starting scheduled air service between New York and Boston August 3, claiming a speed and convenience advantage over both airlines and trains.

The flights which connect the 23rd Street New York Skyport in Manhattan with a landing area in Boston Harbor, take 75 minutes; in Boston, the last link is a water taxi that meets the plane at its float location.

But don't expect a bargain: with great convenience comes great price: $395, including free beer and wine. The carrier also operates charters and flies wealthy weekenders to Long Island beach spots including Montauk, Easthampton and Shelter Island.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
