French Market Memories, New Orleans

Martha, a mid-19th-century customer sits on a bench with her basket of produce, perhaps waiting to walk home with a friend, while Jacques the Butcher stands nearby, offering steak to anyone who will buy.

The two statues stand in Dutch Alley at the French Market, which is the oldest continuous public market in the U.S., started in 1791 as a trading post. Martha is the work of Paul Perret, and Jacques was created by Eric Kaposta. Both were installed in 1983 by Friends of the Market.
