Last month we took a road trip to Memphis, Tennessee and enjoyed seeing some of the sights. It was a whirlwind trip, but we did get to see Graceland, as well as a lot of the music related museums. One museum we didn’t get to, but plan to see the next time, is the Civil Rights Museum. Even though we didn’t do a tour, we did go to take a few pictures and take a moment of silence for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
For those that may not know, this museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel, which was the site of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968; King died at St. Joseph's Hospital. Two other buildings and their adjacent property, also connected with the King assassination, have been acquired as part of the museum complex.
The complex is located at 450 Mulberry Street, with all properties except the Lorraine Motel owned by the Lorraine Civil Rights Museum Foundation. The motel is owned by the State of Tennessee and operated by the Foundation under a 20-year lease with the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville.
