Newark's Liberty International Airport, one of NYC's airport trio, is getting a bunch of new attention and new routes lately, due to an easing of slot restrictions at the field.
Like NYC's other two airports, demand is heavy and slots have been dominated by established airlines, meaning it's been harder for newer and lower-cost airlines to get a chance. Now, with FAA easing the rules, a number of airlines have been able to add Newark, including fast-growing ultra-lowcost carrier Allegiant, and Icelandic discounter WOW.
Other airlines, with a toehold there already, are expanding their Newark schedules, including Southwest and JetBlue. And Alaska Airlines, which has recently turned more attention to the East Coast, is adding a second flight between Newark and its main Seattle hub as well as adding three other destinations, Portland, San Diego and San Jose, CA. The first two will compete head to head with United, which dominates Newark, and the third will be the only Newark-to-Silicon Valley nonstop.
