New Year's Eve with a 400-pound Peep

It's either the dream or a nightmare, depending on how you feel about the iconic marshmallow chicks: Ringing in the New Year as a 400-pound nearly five-foot tall Peep slides down a pole at PeepsFest in Bethlehem, PA.

And not just once: PeepsFest schedules call for the massive chick-drop on December 30 as well as at midnight on the 31st as part of the 13th annual celebration of squishy chicks, bunnies, pumpkins, holiday trees and more in the home town of Just Born, the company behind them.

The event is open to the public again after a ban on visitors last year, but is being limited to 2,000 guests at a time with social distancing and mask rules.

And, by the way, despite the iconic candy's 'just born' connection with Christmas and Bethlehem, its real birthplace was Brooklyn, where Sam Born opened a candy shop in 1923 and marketed his made-daily confections as 'Just Born.' He and his brothers-in-law moved the operation to Bethlehem in 1932. He also held the patent on the first machine to mechanically insert sticks into lollipops.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
