New technology will track flights every 15 minutes

Map of theoretical search areas for MH370. New technology would track planes every 15 minutes

A new system that will "ping" flights every 15 minutes, and could have helped located missing flights such as last year's Malaysia MH370, is on the way for the world's airlines.

The head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents about 250 airlines all over the world, announced that testing of the system would begin soon and be completed by this fall; the tests will be conducted in the Asia/Pacific region. Once completed, IATA would create a uniform set of rules to be proposed to governments and airlines.

According to Tony Tyler, CEO of IATA, "The plan is that there will be some sort of 15-minute reporting. How it will work will be very much influenced by this implementation initiative that's going on."

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
