It's not often that a smaller museum has an attraction that can guarantee big crowds for an exhibition, but the Lakenhal Museum in Leiden, Netherlands is in that enviable situation with the planned debut of a previously unknown painting by Rembrandt.
The picture, now undergoing restoration before its November 2019 debut in an exhibit of the painter's early works. Museum curator Christiaan Vogelaar confirmed the news, but gave few details. He told local press that ‘First we need to make sure it is restored in time so there is enough time to carry out research into the work. I am not allowed to say anything else."
It's the second time recently for a 'new' Rembrandt. A Portrait of a Young Gentleman, bought at auction 18 months ago by an art historian and dealer, was previously thought to be the work of one of Rembrandt's apprentices, but has now been authenticated as the work of the master.
