New 'City of Wine' isn't a city

Portugal's Douro wine region has been named as Europe's 2023 City of Wine, the first time the distinction has gone to a region rather than a specific city.

The picturesque wine-growing area along the Douro River put together a joint application after one of its cities tried unsuccessfully for the title in 2018. The application was made by the Douro Intermunicipal Committee, which includes over a dozen towns and cities.

The European Wine City annual competition was launched by the European Network of Wine Cities in 2012, and aims to promote tourism and publicise the European wine-producing regions. It is supported by national wine associations across the eleven member countries of the network: Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, and Serbia.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
