New attraction offers James Bond experience

If Harry Potter, Star Wars and various superheroes can bring in the big bucks for a fan "experience," why not James Bond? That's the thinking behind 007 Elements, an interactive experience built into a mountainous area used for the filming of Spectre. It opens July 12.

Drawing mainly on that book and film, and with the help of its set and effects designers, the structure is meant to have the feel of a lair for one of the villains of Ian Fleming's books. It's at the Gaislachkogl ski resort in Sölden, Switzerland, where filming took place; in fact the restaurant next door was used as the Hoflerklinik in the film.

The new structure is tucked into the mountain so that only the entrance, exit, two windows and a viewing plaza are visible from the outside. Even the construction was worthy of a Bond film: the architect told Architectural Digest that “The permafrost at this elevation, the geological fault lines, and the exposed location on the peak created huge challenges during the build. The snowfall prevented us from getting vehicles to the site, so we ended up having to fly the concrete in by helicopter.”

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
