Natural Bridge Cavern in San Antonio, Texas, already the state's largest commercial cavern system is poised for another big addition as an exploration crew last week followed a lead to a new previously unexplored area.
The caverns, first discovered in 1960, are operated by the Wuest family whose members are also the lead explorers of the new area, first located by sight of a column of steam rising from a narrow underground crack.
Through continued exploration both from nearby caves that might be connected and from within the already-known parts of the cavern, the area known and the area open to the public have both grown steadily since the 60s. The complex is a National Natural Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
