Gumbo's Pic of the Day, July 13, 2014: Mijajima, Japan at Sunset

One of my favorite places on my trip to Japan was the small island of Itsukushima. It's more commonly called Miyajima (Shrine Island) The island's approximately an hour from Hiroshima, depending on which means of transport you take. The website below shows some transportation options, just make sure to get on the correct train and ferry that you need - it's a little confusing in person

Shrine
Torri gate
Miyajima is famous for the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, whose main buildings are built over water on pier-type structures. Its torri gate appears to float during high tide.
Wilddeer
I went during sunset and it was incredible.I really enjoyed the friendly wild deer that roam amongst the visitors. If you go in the late afternoon,it will be fairly empty because all the shops are closing down.It is very peaceful and if you're not on a strict budget, consider staying at one of the islands ryokans to fully enjoy the experience without worrying about having to catch the last ferry of the day at 8:30 pm.
Stairway
The Itsukushima Shrine Complex is designated a World Heritage Site and several buildings and objects are designated a National Treasures by the Japanese Government.
