'Marriage Italian Style' gets an update

And no, it's not a remake of the 1964 classic film with Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren. Instead, it's an update to Italy's marriage laws to remove references to staying faithful.

The bill, now in the Judiciary Committee of the Italian Senate, is based on recent court rulings that infidelity is not a sufficient grounds for separation; it has to be proven that the cheating led to a breakdown of the relationship.

The senators sponsoring the bill say that the purpose of ensuring fidelity was to determine whether children were legitimate, and since the law no longer distinguishes "legitimate" or "natural" children, it's not needed, and since it originally only referred to a woman's fidelity, it's now sexist.

They also argue that the state has no real legitimate interest in whether or not people stay faithful.

So, while the legal battle goes on...what are the numbers? A 2013 poll indicated that 55% of Italian men and 33% of women have strayed, making them the "least faithful" in Europe. Lest anyone cast stones, Britain and Germany are only a couple of points behind.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
