Madrid Museums: Beyond the Big 3

Madrid is known for three of Europe's top art museums—the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofia—but a recent survey by TheLocal.es points to a variety of other museums definitely worth a look.

They include some major art collections, including that of the Palacio de Liria, a vast private art collection that's only recently been regularly opened to the public; the Museo Cerralbo, formerly the home of the 17th Marquis, and an exhibit itself aside from its artworks and, in a smaller home, the Museo Sorolla. The museum is in the former family home of Spain's impressionist/realist master of the late 19th century, and houses a large number of his works.

The list isn't limited to art: it also includes a robot museum, a subway museum housed in a former station, and even a museum dedicated to Ratoncito Perez, the rodent who does for Spanish kids what the Tooth Fairy does in America.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
