Longest cruise: 3 weeks on Mississippi

America's longest river cruise is making its way north up the Mississippi toward its eventual destination in Minnesota's Twin Cities on a 22-day odyssey.

While three-week cruises aren't all that rare on the ocean, most U.S. river cruises run about a week, with a few a bit shorter and some a couple of days longer. American Cruise Lines, with its newest ship American Melody, is betting its customers want more.

The company is experiencing a boost in bookings, which it attributes to passengers who might otherwise have gone on European river cruises trying out local waters due to the pandemic. The trip covers 10 states along the river and features local-accented cuisine.

One glitch marked Friday's sailing; due to damage from Hurricane Ida, the departure was moved from New Orleans up the river to Natchez, Mississippi.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
