Local Feed, Georgetown, Kentucky

During our recent visit to Kentucky we stayed in Georgetown, a small city near Lexington.  Our Airbnb host recommend several restaurants, the top one being Local Feed.

It was a great recommendation!  Local Feed is situated in a nicely renovated building that used to be an icehouse, constructed in the 1890s.  The restaurant is known for its efforts to use locally sourced products.

Local Feed is situated near downtown, not far from Georgetown College.  It's across the street from a natural spring, Royal Spring, from which Elija Craig used water to make the first bourbon ever (or at least so rumor says).

We started our meal with an interesting appetizer of roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions, formage blanc, topped with a farm egg.  It was absolutely delicious -- the photo doesn't do it justice.

We enjoyed bibb salads, with country ham, apples, walnuts, farmhouse bleu, and topped with sorghum vinaigrette. Another excellent choice.

Whenever we're in the southern states, my wife and I try to enjoy a meal of catfish and hush puppies, which were also fantastic.  If you've never tried catfish, don't do so until you're in the south.  They seem to be the only ones who know how to prepare it properly.

As we left, we passed a wood-burning smoker outside.  One of the staff came out at that time and hung a slab of raw bacon inside, presumably getting it ready for the next day's breakfast.
