Lisbon seeking UNESCO Heritage designation

Lisbon is asking UNESCO to designate its Baixa Pombalina district as a World Heritage site, honoring its classic beauty as well as its historic importance. The application process is nearly complete, and will now be forwarded to the UNESCO committee.

The neighborhood was created after the 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of the city's downtown sector, including its royal palace. The reconstruction was carried out under direction of the Marquis de Pombal, who not only laid out the plan, but created a building-frame design that was one of the first to be earthquake-proof.

Sponsors of the designation also point to its importance beyond the city; the reconstruction of Lisbon made it Europe's first 'modern' city and created a model followed over the years by many others.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
