Lisbon: free transit for young and old

Lisbon's local government has approved a plan to make public transport free for residents under 18 or over 65 on the city's trains, trams and buses, and expressed hopes that it can extend to more people in future.

Officials hope the measure will be a strong incentive for more people to use public transit to commute and travel around the city, even though most working-age people will not be included. University students are, though, up to age 23, or 24 for longer degree programs.

Carlos Moedas, head of the local legislature, told reporters that “the trend will have to be free transport for all, but this is not possible in a first step.” Still, he said, “It is a historic day for our city, as we have achieved something unprecedented for the people of Lisbon.”
