The Swiss city of Lausanne is looking to add a new town crier to its current rota of mellow-voiced officials whose job is mainly, well really entirely, to call out the time once an hour between 10 pm and 2 am.
The job is part-time and is shared with others to ensure that every night, 365 nights a year, as has been the case since 1405, someone will climb the 53 stone steps to the top of the Cathedral's bell tower (that's after climbing to the base of the tower).
Once in place, the crier has only two duties: to watch over the city, and to call out the hour in French. The other job requirements are an interesting mix: Applicants can't have a criminal record, can't fall asleep on the job, must be up to the daily climb and, for reasons not explained, must have a business apprenticeship certificate.
