Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport is putting a new emphasis on international; it will double its international gates to 14, and make one of them capable of handling the huge A380.
The airport is the nation's 9th busiest, with over 40 million passengers a year, almost all of it aimed at Las Vegas vacations and conventions, the area's core business. The Las Vegas Convention and Tourism Authority has a goal of growing the international business, which accounted for about 19% of the business last year, up 3 points from 2012.
With a potential limit to domestic growth as many more areas have gambling, Las Vegas wants to attract more business from Asia, where tourism is growing, especially from China. The airport and the bureau will be working to attract direct flights from China and Japan; there are none, now. The airport expansion will be ready for them by late next year or early 2017.
