LaGuardia gets new shortest route

You could almost drive in the time it takes to fly the new shortest route from New York's LaGuardia airport. In fact, if you add time to check in and go through security and then ground transportation at the end, driving is the faster route between LGA and Hartford, Connecticut.

Starting in September, Delta is offering that service up to three times a day, with taxiing time on the ground expected to exceed the actual flying time. The flight is blocked in schedule for one hour. The service is expected to be used mainly by Connecticut passengers headed for other cities through Delta's domestic hub at LaGuardia. Delta also flies from Hartford to Atlanta, Minneapolis and Detroit. Because of slot controls, Delta will have to cut some other flights at LGA.

The new flight is one of the five shortest scheduled routes in the U.S., joining service as short as 72 miles from Colorado Springs to Denver. Others include Detroit to Lansing, San Francisco to Santa Rosa and Los Angeles to San Diego.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
