Airport slots at Las Vegas McCarran International
Pennsylvania is considering licensing slot machines at its airports to generate funds that could help balance the state budget...or who knows? pay for some airport improvements,
At a hearing Monday at Harrisburg International Airport, the airport's executive director cheered for the prospect, saying it "would be especially helpful to HIA and its flying customers." Supporters point to the $25 million a year the state earns from 1330 slot machines at Reno and Las Vegas airports.
But not all of the state's six commercial airports are cheering for the idea. Pittsburgh is with Harrisburg in welcoming the idea of slots but "done in a tasteful way," whatever that is. Both airports have struggled to remain profitable and busy. Philadelphia, where business remains strong, is on the other side. The city-owned airport's CEO told the legislators that "the placement of slot machines would significantly detract from the path we are on and negatively impact the positive image of the airport."
