July 12, 2020: Traffic Jam, Venice

It might be a bit difficult to imagine a traffic jam in a city that has no roads, but as travelers who have been to Venice know, it can get pretty busy and crowded.

01 Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge is one of the iconic symbols of Venice and was the first bridge constructed across the Grand Canal.  The bridge dates to the late 16th century and is usually packed with tourists crossing to the other side or shopping at one of the bridge's many small kiosks.

While crossing the bridge, we looked down at the Grand Canal and I was a little surprised to find all these gondolas more or less holding their positions in what seemed a floating traffic jam.  I think they all wanted access to the same dock, but didn't stick around long enough to watch the canal traffic resume its normal flow.
