July 11, 2020: Ancient Church, Modern Doors

These beautiful doors, which seem to fit so well with the ancient church they are part of, are actually among its newest features: they are the 1970 work of blacksmith/sculptor Achim Kühn.

Berlin's Marienkirche, or St Mary Church, is the city's second-oldest and is in one of the city's oldest parts—although in 1270, when the church was first built the area was called Neuermarkt, or New Market.

Kühn himself is a Berlin institution of sorts. As an apprentice to his father, Fritz Kühn, he qualified as a master blacksmith, and later studied architecture. His grandfather was also a master blacksmith, and so is one of his sons.

If you're curious about the interior, DrFumblefinger's TravelGumbo blog has lovely pictures and videos of an orchestra rehearsal.
