July 10, 2020: Trumpeter Swans, Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge

 

The trumpeter swan is the largest North America's waterfowl, weighing up to almost 40 pounds and with a wingspan of almost 7 feet.  It's a permanent resident in the refuge area of Eastern Washington and gets its name from its distinctive call.

This pair is known to nest in Wheeler's Pond.
