JetBlue making moves on Atlanta

JetBlue, which returned to Atlanta earlier this year after a 13-year absence, is adding new flights and cities to its Atlanta service, and it may have even more in mind.

Starting in March, JetBlue will fly twice a day between Atlanta and both New York JFK and Fort Lauderdale, and once a day to Orlando. The routes were originally planned to start sooner, but were held up by a dispute over gates at the Atlanta airport.

JetBlue accused the airport, where traffic is heavily dominated by Delta, of reneging on gate assignments for the new routes, and filed formal complaints to the FAA. The letter accused the airport of trying to restrict competition at the airport. All of JetBlue's Atlanta routes, including its 5-a-day flights to Boston, compete directly with Delta.

The airport now says it will have gates for the flights, and JetBlue may have more plans for the market. As for competition with Delta: It's not limited to Atlanta. Late last year, JetBlue added New York LGA to Boston service that competes with Delta's hourly shuttle—and the result was lower shuttle fares.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
