Japan: AirKitchen for vegan meals

Just as Airbnb offers to share spaces, Japan now has a service for vegans that allows vegans to book and share home-cooked vegan meals, filling a difficult gap for vegan visitors in many parts of Japan.

AirKitchen Plus allows foreign travelers to book a meal through its website, choosing one of the offered menus and hosts. The company also points out that it offers an opportunity to meet and spend time with local vegans and to learn more about Japanese culture and lifestyle.

While major cities have some vegan restaurants, many areas don't, and many traditional Japanese vegetable-based dishes also include bonito fish flakes and other not-for-vegan ingredients, especially in soup and stock.

AirKitchen so far is operating in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hokkaido and Okinawa. For more information, visit their website.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
