Jan. 1, 2017: Forest renewal at the New York Botanical Gardens

The Thain Family Forest in the New York Botanical Gardens is an original old growth forest. Other than maintaining the paths, the NYBG lets nature take its course in this area. So when trees fall, they are left to decompose and return nutrients to the ground. Walking through, I found this old tree, which I call "Dragon's Head."
