Italy plans a bridge to Sicily

Italy's government has pledged to complete a 2000-year dream of connecting Sicily to the Italian mainland by a bridge, even though opponents say that building the huge bridge in an earthquake zone is a mistake and that the cost is too high.

In modern times, the bridge project has been proposed and canceled a number of times, most recently in 2011. The plans for the 2011 project, with revisions, are proposed for the new project which would begin construction in 2024.

Among the issues raised, a maritime union said that the bridge would have to be higher above the water than the planned 65 meters to allow modern cruise ships to pass under. The 3.2km bridge would carry both truck and rail traffic.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
