Italy museums urged to raise prices

Italy's Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano has touched off a bit of controversy with his support for higher peak season museum ticket prices and his assertion that Americans could pay for it.

After Florence's Uffizi Gallery announced an increase from €20 to €25 for tickets from March through November, he urged others to follow, saying “After all, the average American family that comes to Italy spends 10 to 20 thousand dollars, because of the cost of flights and hotels. So paying 20 euros for a ticket to see a unique site like Pompeii can also be done."

While some commentators have supported the idea, others have argued that the higher rates will also affect Italians and not only foreign visitors, and that “our cultural sites are becoming resorts.”
