Italy investigates Christmas price-gouging

Italy's anti-trust authority AGCM is investigating four airlines, including the one owned by the Italian government over charges they conspired to raise prices on Christmas-season flights to Sicily, a time when many Sicilians return home to family.

The complaints against Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz and ITA Airways come from two consumer groups, Codacons and Assoutenti, which both tracked fares from mainland cities to Palermo, and found them much higher than at other times of the year.

Among the prices noted were €500 one-ways from Rome for a one-hour flight while tickets to New York were going for €459.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
