Italian villagers ask to join Switzerland

Residents of the tiny mountain village of Monteviasco in Italy's Lombardy Alps, cut off from the outside world, have petitioned to have the town become part of Switzerrland's Ticino canton.

The town's troubles stem from the loss in 2018 of a cable car that linked them to roads and services in the valley below. The system was decommissioned after an accident, and requests for repairs have gone unanswered by authorities. That has left the villagers with no access except a serries of winding stairways totaling 1,400 step.

In their petition, published in a local newspaper, they say they want their village to be annexed to Ticino to "escape Italian bureaucratic shackles." The border is only 2 km away. “Attaching Monteviasco to Switzerland now seems to us the only way to reopen the cable car,” they said. There has been no official response from either government.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
