Is your hotel's WiFi fast enough? Check here!

Hotel WiFi Test, a company that collects WiFi data and uses it to help travelers find a hotel where they won't scream in frustration at bad WiFi, has published a list of rankings for chains and hotels in the U.S. and internationally.

They collect their data through a variety of means, including in-room tests by travelers using the Hotel WiFi Test website (which can also test your home WiFi). Hotels can sign up to receive the data also, along with recommendations for improving speed and reliability. If a hotel upgrades its networks, it can have the reports re-set to eliminate data from its old network.

So...the results! They are far too complete and complex to show here, but they are available on the company's website HERE Be sure to click on the "Show Data Table" buttons to see the complete list for each category. But some of the key findings include

  • Free WiFi is often not high-quality WiFi. Many chains offer free WiFi but it is often useful only for e-mail and light browsing.
  • U.S. hotels are more likely to have free WiFi than in Europe, but less likely to have good WiFi
  • Chains have big regional variations. Marriott, for instance, has adequate WiFi in 82% of its Asian locations, vs 47% in U.S. and 65% in Asia.

BUT YOU WANT NAMES, RIGHT?

  • In the U.S., Hyatt tops out the free at 100% and is in a virtual tie with Marriott and Wesin for quality at 45.7%.
  • The U.S. worst list is headed by Embassy Suites with only 23.3% free and Hampton Inns with only 7.4% having adequate service.
  • Europe's best chain, Nordic Choice, had 100% free and 84.7% high quality
  • At the bottom for Europe: Steigenberger with 36.4% free and NH Hotels with 11.8% on quality.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
