Ireland's ferry link to Spain, started last May as a summer-only service will continue year-round, Brittany Ferries has announced.
The route from Cork to Santander, Spain takes 26 to 32 hours, depending on direction, tides and weather, and has proven popular with freight shippers, who largely account for the decision to continue through the winter.
For passengers, it's a car-only ferry; no walk-up passengers are served. At about €189 for a car with four passengers, it's a saving on flying to a Spanish vacation and renting a car. There's a passenger lounge and small cafe aboard.
But it's best for night-owls; because of what works for shippers, the sailings leave Cork just before midnight, and arrive in Spain in early morning of the second day.
Freight shippers have favored it because it provides a direct route to Spain without having to use the UK, soon to leave the EU, or France as a 'land bridge.'
