Inca trail the hard way: blind, and running

Dan Berlin, the American athlete who last year became the first blind man to hike the Grand Canyon, made the challenging 26-mile trek on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 13 hours...a feat that normally takes 4 days walking.

Berlin, who is 45, lost his sight in his 30s. He was assisted in the run, the length of a marathon, by three other runners and a guide who has made  the trek 200 times. His cohort of runners went through the Canyon with him, too. One runs ahead, one runs behind, and they use trekking poles held to either side of him to help him stay on the trail.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
