In SF, a 'gingerlith' rises and falls

Just when it appeared that the rash of metal monoliths popping up around the world and then disappearing had itself disappeared, San Francisco has come up with a new twist on the story.

A seven-foot tall tower of gingerbread, held together by icing and gumdrops, appeared Christmas morning in Corona Heights Park, where it was discovered by a walker out to see the sunrise.

Sadly, although city parks commissioner Phil Ginsburg announced that it would "leave it until the cookie crumbles," the remark turned out to be prescient. After a day of visitors, some of whom took bites as well as selfies, on Saturday morning, it did, collapsing on the ground.
