Denmark's huge Roskilde music festival has contradictions.
On the one hand, it's noted for a focus on the environment and sustainability; on the other it's noted for huge volumes of beer consumed on site...and therefore for huge volumes of liquid waste from guests. And the solution is...recycle the thousands of gallons into more beer.
Oh, not directly. According to the Roskilde Dagbladet newspaper, the festival and the Danish Agriculture and Food Council are planning to collect the urine and use it as fertilizer for malting barley in fields near Copenhagen. The barley will then be harvested and brewed into beer in time for the 2017 edition of the festival. Between 100,000 and 250,000 liters are expected to be collected.
The Festival, which runs from June 27, with the main acts playing July 1 and later, is committed to more organic food choices and to less waste. Less wasted food and materials that is...
