Iceland airlines go head-to-head in U.S.

Two Icelandic airlines have announced they're adding non-stop service from Cleveland to Iceland, with connections to Europe from there, setting up head-to-head competition at an airport that hasn't had non-stop service to Europe in a decade.

Icelandic is adding a 4-a-week schedule starting in May next year, while discount carrier WOW will start on May 4, and is already selling tickets. While Iceland is technically a European destination, the two carriers require a plane change at Rekyjavik/Keflavik.

Icelandic has not announced fares, but WOW is trumpeting tickets starting at $99 to Iceland, or $149 to its connecting destinations on the continent. Those are 'starting at' fares, and don't reflect added fees for many services.

WOW is also adding service to St. Louis, Cincinnati and Detroit, bringing it up to 12 U.S. cities. In some, it is the only non-stop carrier to Iceland. In some, it shares the route with Icelandic.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
