The temperatures rarely get higher than 30 degrees Celsius, the big cities are practically deserted, sea temperatures can get up to 20 degrees Celsius and holiday houses are cheaper than in the Mediterranean.
From sandy beaches to countryside hiking trails - here’s how to spend an awesome summer vacation in Denmark!
Vacation On An Island
While it might not be the first place you think of when someone mentions a vacation on a paradise island, Denmark is more than up to the task. With hundreds of tiny islands, Denmark has more than 40,000 holiday rentals to offer, a lot of which are a stone’s throw away from cozy, sandy beaches.
Out of some 400 islands, only 72 are actually inhabited. Just imagine how great it would be to rent a boat, and sail to an island that you will have entirely to yourself for a day.
And summers get pretty hot in the country. Not as hot as on the Adriatic coast, but hot enough that you can still enjoy swimming in the sea and lying on the beach, without the crowds that are ever present on the Meditarannean beaches.
That’s the beauty of Denmark - there’s enough space for everyone! If you’re sick and tired of huge crowds at your usual vacation destinations, it might be time to try something new and spend your summer vacation on Denmark beaches. And it’s going to cost you less than a vacation in the Mediterannean, so it’s definitely worth considering.
Visit Copenhagen
It goes without saying that Copenhagen is one of the most beautiful cities in the country, and it’s definitely a good idea to spend your summer vacation there. Copenhagen comes alive in the summer - flea markets pop up everywhere and they’re great to visit during the day, while the nights are perfect for parties and concerts.
Walk around the vast King’s Garden and explore the grounds of Rosenborg Castle. Visit the Copenhagen Opera House, admire the modernist architecture and even attend a show if you’re an opera fan! The Opera House hosts world famous performs, so you definitely won’t be disappointed by the options.
A trip to the Tivoli Gardens is also a must; the 19th century amusement park is absolutely magical in the summer. It’s at its prettiest in the early summer days when everything is in full bloom.
And let’s not forget about the amazing Copenhagen museums - Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is heaven for fine art lovers, the National Museum of Denmark is perfect for those who want to learn more about the tradition and culture of the country, while the Guinness World Records Museum attracts people who want to see something unique.
Hike The Countryside
Denmark has a vast countryside, with some hiking trails that are hundreds of kilometers long. And if you are an avid hiker, you can truly spend a wonderful summer vacation roaming around the vast plains, hiking through the forests, along the beaches and on high cliffs that overlook the sea.
One of the shorter hikes is Bindeballestien - a 36-kilometer long hiking and cycling trail that takes you through the stunning Vejle Ådal valley. It is a beginner friendly trail that can be completed in just a couple of days, so you can actually pull it off without staying at hostels. Camping in Denmark in summer is actually really fun, as long as you’re prepared for unexpected rain.
If you’re looking for a real challenge, Hærvejen (Ox Road) is one of Denmark’s longest hiking trails at 500 kilometers. Try and complete the entire trail - it would be an epic experience, and probably one of the most challenging hikes of your life. Well, challenging in terms of endurace - the actual trail is not that difficult, and it’s perfectly suitable for beginners who only want to experience a part of it.
Party At Roskilde Festival
Roskilde is a city in Denmark, best known for the namesake festival. It’s not too far from Copenhagen - some 20 minutes away by train. So, you can either stay in Copenhagen and travel to Roskilde for the festival, or you can stay in the smaller city. Alternatively, camping on the festival site is also an option, but that’s usually more appealing to the younger crowds.
The Roskilde Festival is one of the largest music festivals in Europe. It lasts for about 8 days, and is usually held in late June or early July. The festival is particularly popular among young adults, who just want to party their nights away. And, why wouldn’t you want to party all night long when you have Rihanna on the stage?
The music festival brings some of the hottest artists from the world to Denmark. In 2019, headliners included Cardi B, Travis Scott, Bob Dylan, Wu Tang Clan and Robyn, among others.
Travel To Odense
The main city of Funen island is Denmark’s third largest city, and it’s a great place to be during the summer. Odense is best known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, one of the most famous fairy tale writers evers.
And you can actually visit Hans Christian Andersen's Childhood Home - a must for everyone who still has a soft spot for The Little Mermaid. Møntergården museum is also a very cool place, with modernist architecture on the outside, but 17th century exhibits on the inside.
Odense is characterized by cobblestone alleys, charming colorful houses and gothic churches. Everything in the city’s old town is walking distance, making this a great place for tourists who prefer exploring new cities on foot. And if you want to venture outside the city to the vast plains that surround it, you can do it the Danish way - grab a bike and start pedaling!
