How to be more liveable: Vienna gets suggestions

Liveable Vienna...a place to rest and read in the MuseumQuartier area.

Vienna consistently ranks high on lists of liveable cities, and came in as #1 this year on Mercer's Survey and 2# to Melbourne on The Economist's survey.

Nevertheless, there's always room for improvement, and readers of TheLocal.at have a few suggestions for the Austrian capital. They include

  • Traffic changes. Giving pedestrians priority right-of-way at zebra crossings and allowing pedestrians to cross whenever there's no traffic.
  • Better cycling lanes. More lanes, and more separation from other traffic.
  • Dog mess. Despite fines of up to 225 Euros, in some parts of the city, dog poop is still a problem. One of the suggestions is to publish the pictures of offenders (humans, not dogs).
  • Do something about coffee prices, which have reached as high as 6 Euros a cup in some cafes along the Ringstrasse
  • Smile more.
  • Stop smoking! Austria has one of Europe's higher percentages of smokers. A complete ban on smoking in public takes effect in 2018, but the suggesters urge a stop now.
