How RFID can help protect you from identity theft

RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) uses electromagnetic fields to identify and track information attached to objects including credit cards and passports. Although it has been around for years, its relatively new use is identity and digital theft. RFID skimming enables information from RFID-based smart cards to be read and duplicated.

Many companies are making and selling wallets, purses, backpacks, passport case, luggage and sleeves to shield against attempts to steal information.

Working with Lewis N. Clark, I field-tested an RFID backpack/purse that I hauled all over Vietnam and Cambodia. It was roomy enough to carry everything I needed, but lightweight and with the cross-body strap making it easy to carry while on the go.

Most recently I tried three items from the Lewis N. Clark new WEA RIFD-Blocking Collection when I went to Guatemala. The tote (below left) was perfect for my laptop and other carry-on items. Its size is also just the right size for weekend getaways and work.

I used the cross-body purse (above center) which proved to be the right size for this particular trip and the wristlet for shopping excursions.

I am very impressed with the quality and design of all three. The collection also includes a phone-wallet and a tablet cross-body purse and comes in black or teal.

Identity theft is a serious problem. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
