Hotels going in for custom scents

Numbers of hotels around the world, especially at the high end, are using custom scents to welcome guests with something to feel at home with and remember.

Liam O'Connor, owner-manager of Scent Ireland, is one of the major suppliers of the custom nose-catchers. He told an interviewer from the Irish Independent that “In design up to now, we’ve always engaged four of your main senses. The one that was always forgotten about was your sense of smell.”

Among his hotel customers are the Bedford Townhouse in Limerick, which went for 'warm, inviting, alluring and a little bit quirky' and Ballynahinch Castle with 'hints of pine, turf and floral notes from the walled garden.' Others splashing out for scents include high-class spots in England and Paris, as well as the W Hotel chain.

He's also worked with gyms, dentists' offices, a crematorium, nightclubs and a luxury train; the scents are diffused without volatile chemicals, aerosols or heat. He says that hotel scents have to be understated, matching the other elements of the decor. "If you can smell the lavender, for example, it ain't working properly," he says.
