Hot times for ski resorts

Well, maybe the headline should say 'hard' rather than 'hot,' but either way it describes the plight of numbers of European and American ski resorts, which have little to no snow at a time they normally are at their busiest.

In France, half the ski resorts have been unable to open because of lack of snow; a similar situation has affected numbers of ski areas in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, where temperatures have run into the 60s.

The Swiss resort of Adelboden, scheduled for World Cup ski events next week, has had to scramble to get approval to run the events on man-made snow, in a solution similar to that seen in the image above from France.

Resorts that also have summer seasons have taken to touting their summer offerings again: hiking and biking trails, zip-lining and more, but it's unlikely to seriously attract those who want to ski.

As climate change continues, the expectations continue to shift. While only a few years ago it was widely understood that ski resorts below 1000 metres above sea level would soon lose their snows, the warning line has now moved to 1500 metres.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
