Hilton plans to green up its game

Hilton Hotels says it will cut its environmental footprint in half by 2030, and increase its investment in social impact projects. Included in the plan is a pledge to put no soap in landfills and reduce carbon emission.

The chain is the latest to pledge reducing plastics and other non-recyclables. The movement is driven in part by increasing regulation and official pressure, including the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, but also in part by public opinion.

A survey of 72,000 Hilton customers backs up the idea that consumers are interested in environmental and ethical issues, especially those under 25. Overall, more than a third said they research these issues before making decisions.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
