Full of so many unique and wonderful locations to explore, I have recently been using the TrailTale app which is available on both IOS and Android to take me on the most detailed and memorable walking tours in most major UK towns and cities. Among some of the newer additions to the app is the historical town of Bassetlaw, which is home to some interesting landmarks. Here are just a few of the many great sites you can find on the walking app at Bassetlaw.
Worksop
Known as the “Gateway to the Dukeries”, Worksop’s trail will show you all its great heritage. Being close to four ducal principal seats which are now obsolete, hence the name, Worksop reflects the history wherein four ducal families lived close together with all their large farmland and parks almost connecting. You may also visit Bridge Street which, due to it being the main trading street, was the most important area of the town in the 16th century. See the Priory Church, and the Priory Gate, making Worksop a very prominent religious centre. Also, take a peaceful stroll down Chesterfield Canal - when permission for building the canal was granted in 1772, the church bells were said to have rung for four days.
Blyth
Blyth is a small town full of intriguing history, and the walking trails will take you through it all. Visit St Johns, once known as the Hospital of St John the Evangelist founded in 1446, to see its 13th-century structural features. See Blyth Memorial Hall, founded in 1927, a tremendous two-storey building dedicated to the lives lost in the first and second world wars. Gaze upon the gorgeous St Mary’s Church, the only remains of the Blyth Priory. Flooded with so much history, this church originates back to the 1100s and is among the top 100 churches in England.
Retford
Receiving royal charter in 1246, Retford is one of the oldest market towns in England. The trail will lead you through Grove Street where you will find number 25, one of the oldest domestic houses dating back to the 17th century. You may also view the two-ton, twenty-four-pounder Sebastopol Cannon dating from 1831. It was brought to Retford in celebration of winning the Crimean War. Founded in the 12th century, the beautiful St. Swithun’s Church is another astonishing landmark that is amazing both inside and outside. A must-see if you visit Retford.
Tuxford
Tuxford, a small historic market town, is another prime location for the TrailTale app tours. Tuxford boats one of only three village lock-ups in Nottinghamshire, where you can see the intricate designs of where prisoners used to be held in solitude. Founded in 1669, take a trip to the Old Grammar School which was built by Charles Read, a rich, educated shipper. It is now home to Tuxford’s library. Tuxford also has its War Memorial which was first unveiled in 1921 to honour the fallen soldiers from Tuxford in the First World War. This great monument radiates the history and respect Tuxford has for its predecessors.
