Heading for Paris? Expect Metro work detours

Paris has major transit upgrade and extension work going on in its transport system, and it will cause detours and closings, sometimes long ones, this summer as the city tries to do the work while most Parisians are on vacation.

Among the major projects:

  • The RER C line that runs along the Left Bank and serves popular destinations such as St. Michel, Musee d'Orsay, Invalides and the Eiffel Tower is closed until Aug. 26 for major track upgrades. Metro Line 10 covers most stops along the route.
  • RER A, Europe's busiest train line, will have no service until August 29 on the stretch between Nation and La Defense—essentially all of central Paris. The closed stations include busy Chatelet, Auber and Etoile. Passengers for those stations can use other RER and Metro lines; to bypass the whole mess, Line 1 is a choice.
  • Metro Line 4 is being automated, and the work includes station closures to install platform safety barriers, more than a summer project. Chateau Rouge is closed until July 31, and Saint Sulpice until September 7.

Other projects underway include re-aligning some tram routes, highway improvements, added cycle lanes on major streets and the first construction of the so-callled SuperMetro, the Grand Paris Express. For more details from TheLocal.fr, click HERE
